The Suicide Squad: John Cena is Filling in For Dave Bautista Who Couldn't Commit to the Movie

It was just reported that John Cena was being eyed for a role in The Suicide Squad, and though we have no idea on who he's being set up to play, it looks like he's replacing another fellow pro-wrestler.

As confirmed by Variety's Justin Kroll, Cena was actually approached for the role after Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy) couldn't commit to the film. This was Kroll's post:

It was rumored before that Dave Bautista was being eyed for a role of Peacemaker, a new character that will be introduced in the film, but seeing as he has to work on Dune and Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead, it's understandable that he won't be free to once again re-team with Gunn.

No official announcement has been said about Cena, but if he does come aboard, he would be the second pro-wrestler to enter the DCEU. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has also been cast as Black Adam in this franchise, and after the success of Shazam!, we could be seeing his solo film coming out in a few years. He did tease that they were aiming for a production start next year.

We don't know much about The Suicide Squad yet, but the film is set to begin production later this year. While I'm hoping we get our first look at SDCC 2019, I wouldn't be surprised if something was dropped near the release of Birds of Prey which comes February 2020.

Catch Gunn's The Suicide Squad when it comes out Aug. 6, 2021.
