Why was Barriss Offee promoted in Star Wars: Tales of the Empire? Considering that she's still a Jedi, what does the Empire see as valuable in her? What does her promotion as Inquisitor mean in the animated series?

Lyn Offers Barriss Offee an Opportunity She Can't Refuse

By the fourth episode of Tales of the Empire, Barriss finally shows up in the animated series since her first appearance in The Clone Wars.

She was locked away in prison until her friend, Lyn, offered her an opportunity she couldn't refuse.

Lyn presented the offer: Barriss Offee could either use her Jedi abilities to fight for the Empire or rot in her prison cell. As the trailer shows, she chose the former.

Barriss Offee was initially led to believe that the Jedi and the Galactic Republic were responsible for the Clone Wars, leading her to her first betrayal.

With the Empire now choosing her as part of the new coven of Inquisitors, Barriss Offee gets exposed to the dark truth behind the Empire's main goal.

What Does Barriss Offee's Promotion Mean in Tales of the Empire?

As the Grand Inquisitor announced upon their gathering, Barriss Offee is one of the few selected candidates to be promoted to an Inquisitor position.

This is to "ensure the security" of the Empire, one that will "protect the vision" of Emperor Palpatine.

Part of the test was to not only "stop fighting like a Jedi" against the Grand Inquisitor but to even execute one of her former colleagues with the use of the lightsaber during her trial.

Lyn and the Grand Inquisitor saw her potential in defending the Empire.

However dark Barriss Offee's Star Wars role had become, it is also thanks to this promotion that she gets to uncover what the Inquisitors do to people who refuse the Empire.

The primary objective of Inquisitors, after all, is to hunt down and turn the Jedi over to the dark side or be killed for not heeding the Empire's orders.

Barriss couldn't see how this would revive the Galaxy and eventually made one last betrayal against Lyn by accepting her former role as a Jedi and turning her back on the Empire.
