The Suicide Squad: Joel Kinnaman Also Coming Back as Rick Flagg

When James Gunn was announced as the director of the Suicide Squad sequel, it was made to look like he was rebooting the entire franchise, dropping several characters from the first film to focus on a new cast. With him being re-hired for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, though, it seems that he's had a change of heart, bringing back more people from the previous film. We just recently got news that Viola Davis' Amanda Waller is making a return, and now we have news that Joel Kinnaman is coming back as Rick Flagg.

This comes from Discussing Film who can confirm that Kinnaman is reprising his role as the leader of Task Force X. We don't have much details on what he'll be doing in the sequel, but I have a feeling it's going to be a limited role this time around.

While I'm expecting Amanda Waller to still be the "voice of god" of the squad, I'm guessing Flagg is going to be some kind of glorified cameo—much like Channing Tatum's Duke in the GI Joe sequel. Maybe he gets killed in the beginning? We don't know. But seeing as how the character was announced so late in the game, I think his role was something that came in late.

Personally I actually liked Kinnaman in the first Suicide Squad. Out of all the other characters, he was actually given something to do, and you can't deny he has great chemistry with Will Smith. Maybe they can bring him in for the third film?
