Suicide Squad 2 Reportedly Cast Idris Elba As New Character, Not Deadshot

Fans who have been expecting to see Idris Elba as the sharp-shooting assassin Floyd Lawton in Suicide Squad 2 may be in for a major disappointment. A new report reveals that the Hobbes and Shaw star will not be taking over as Deadshot. The good news is, Elba is now set to play a completely new character.

There have been several previous reports about Elba possibly taking on the role that Will Smith vacated due to scheduling conflicts. However, a new report from Variety states that James Gunn and Warner Bros. have decided to do away with Deadshot in Suicide Squad 2. The decision was made after several weeks of discussion and all parties believe that this was the best move.

It is unclear why the director and the studio decided to do away with Deadshot's return. Some believe Warner Bros. is still hoping Smith will eventually accept another project in the future so he can continue playing Floyd Lawton. Likewise, it would give Elba a chance to stake his claim on a completely new character.

So who exactly will Elba be playing in Suicide Squad 2? For now, Gunn and Warner Bros. have not yet announced the Avengers: Infinity War star's role. There are speculations that Elba will portray a different comic book character or one that will be created by Gunn solely for the sequel.

Although Smith will not be returning in the film, Suicide Squad 2 still has plenty of star power. In addition to Elba, it was previously reported that Viola Davis might reprise her role as Amanda Waller. Jai Courtney, who portrayed Captain Boomerang in the David Ayer movie, has confirmed that Digger Harkness will be back as well. Margot Robbie is also expected to return as Harley Quinn.

Suicide Squad 2 is scheduled for release on August 6, 2021.
