Doomworld – After using the Spear of Destiny to alter reality the Legion members now have everything they ever wanted with the Legends clueless as their servants. That is until Mick Rory, tired of the good life, starts getting his team back together for a show down with reality itself hanging in the balance.

Best Legends episode ever. It’s dramatic, action packed, hilarious, packs genuine surprise twists and my God is it gloriously geeky! What’s more it’s come at the perfect time. For most of the season we’ve been building up to the Spear of Destiny being used. Now all those prior events feel so meaningful and worthwhile because both in story and entertainment value this is a colossal pay off. Yes, it has the advantage of minimal continuity due to being an alternative reality/out of character episode but it doesn’t use that for easy writing it gets wildly creative. All the Legion members fantasies turned reality make sense given their existing character history. They’ve all endowed themselves with power while fixing the biggest regrets/mistakes in their lives such as Merlyn having all his family (and both hands) back. Yet there’s such a wonderful depth to the Legion and the combustible nature of their team with different pockets of betrayals being planned. Their chemistry is spot too, like ribbing on each other for questionably timed monologues.

The early scenes are incredibly well written to convey them all in positions of absolute power so quickly and efficiently. The opening vigilante chase and outcome sets clear dramatic stakes that even known characters can be killed off (while giving someone a well earned badass cameo) followed up by Darhk’s trophy rack; admit it, you paused to identify them all too. While in some ways that does make it clear reality will be fixed eventually.... screw it (yes, that’s a technical term)! Use the circumstances, dramatically kill off characters for an epic conflict then press reset afterwards because it will still make for spectacular viewing along the way. The story unfolds into an excellent dramatic affair and even with reduced superpowers on show the climatic multi-team show down is outstanding as the Spear is hurled between characters and various one on one fights.

The only minor niggle of the episode was the use of Ray’s oh so convenient memory restoring gun. While this did tie in well to the idea their real personalities trying to subconsciously break out it should have been a bit more difficult to bring Legends members back; at least on the first time. Oh and Mick calling Passion of the Christ a good movie.... come on, he’s got better taste than that. The rest of the Legends alternative incarnations were all spot on. I especially enjoyed Sara and Vixen as Darhk’s rather ravishing hit squad (aka “the bimbo brigade”) and the way conspiracy theory Nate had a hint of Cisco about him.

Although he’s minor feature of the episode can we all please give Author Darvill a round of applause and a plate of Nate’s mom’s sandwiches for his Jack Sparrow level marooned madness (rum included). He is absolutely hilarious being torn between his new found culinary callings and depressed waning hopes of contacting the other team members. He’s so good I’m still unsure whether the Legion made him cake obsessed as a cruel joke or it was just his way of coping with the isolation.

Thankfully Legends is not making us wait 4 weeks after something this good. Its season finale episode will be aired next week. Although it’s been getting some strong competition recently (especially from Supergirl) I think now it’s fair to call it. Legends has been best the Flarrowverse show this season through the sheer magnitude of its cast & crew commitment to being pure nerdy fun. This may be Doomworld but I think to myself..... what a wonderful world.
