The answer to this isn’t as straightforward as there are three light novel series in the franchise, two of which are still ongoing.
What’s clear is that the new anime season is part of the ongoing adaptation of the first light novel series.
The Irregular at Magic High School Anime Is Finally Back with Season 3
The Irregular at Magic High School is a science fantasy and action romance anime that began back in April 2014.
Its first season consisted of 26 episodes, and it was animated by Madhouse (of Hunter x Hunter and Frieren fame). Even though the show was a success, it took six years until a second season was released.
Season 2 was only 13 episodes long, and it aired during the Fall 2020 season. Instead of Madhouse, anime studio Eight Bit (of Blue Lock and Laid-Back Camp Season 3) took over animation duties.
Following the second season, fans had to wait four years for the third season which finally premiered earlier this month.
For this new season, studio Eight Bit is back alongside the original voice cast members from the first two seasons.

Is The Irregular at Magic High School Light Novel Complete? Current Status
As with many popular anime right now, The Irregular at Magic High School started as a light novel series. Its first volume was released back in July 2011.
Currently, The Irregular at Magic High School light novel series is complete as its story concluded in Volume 32. While the main story is over, the franchise still has two ongoing light novel series.
First, there’s The Irregular At Magic High School Magian Company which serves as a direct sequel. This series began in October 2020, and it has since gotten eight volumes.
There’s also The Irregular at Magic High School Maidens of Cygnus, a spinoff series that began in January 2021.

What Volumes Will The Irregular at Magic High School Season 3 Cover?
As the original novel series has 32 volumes, there is still plenty of material to cover in the anime. After all, season 2 only covered the events until volume 11.
Thus, season 3 is set to cover the story of volumes 12 to 15. By the end of the season, there are still 17 volumes to cover, meaning the anime won’t likely end anytime soon.
