Here's Why Cheetah Becomes a Villain in Wonder Woman 1984

We already know that Barbara Minerva is one of the main villains in Wonder Woman 1984. But why does Diana Prince's own friend eventually turn against her in the film? As it turns out, Barbara becomes Cheetah because of her own insecurities.

Director Patty Jenkins was interviewed by Empire magazine where she revealed interesting new details about the new characters that will appear in the highly-anticipated DC Extended Universe sequel (via Syfy Wire). For instance, Jenkins confirmed that it is Barbara's low self-esteem that leads her down a villainous path.

"What makes Barbara turn into Cheetah is feeling like she's never been as good as someone like Diana," Jenkins said. She then shared how Barbara's personality is inspired by insecure people.

"She reminds me of certain people I've known who have such low self-confidence, that they're always holding themselves back. Then once they start to embrace change, out comes this ugly resentment built up over all those years," Jenkins said.

But why turn on Diana? Jenkins stated that the conflict has "this real misunderstanding at its core."

So far, we've only officially seen Kristen Wiig's character in her human form as depicted in the trailer as well as the posters for 1984. However, there is little doubt that her turn as Cheetah is going to be an interesting one. Needless to say, we can't wait to see Barbara when she finally transforms into Cheetah later this year.

Wonder Woman 1984 will bring back Gal Gadot as the titular DC superhero. The film is now scheduled for release on August 14.
