Death Note 2 Producer Will Take Fan Criticism of First Movie into Account

Netflix's live-action adaptation of Death Note received generally mixed to negative reviews when it was released in 2017, and many fans of the original Japanese manga series by writer Tsugumi Ohba and artist Takeshi Obata criticized the big changes of the film, and now, they're hoping that Death Note 2 will fix things for the sequel. Recently, producer Masi Oka revealed that the sequel is happening with fan complaints of the first film in mind.

Just in case you didn't know, Oka served as a producer for Netflix's first Death Note film starring Nat Wolff, and he also played a part in the movie. Recently, he's been busy working on shows like Star Wars: Visions, and he also talked about Death Note 2 during an interview with ScreenRant.

"All I can say is still in the works," Oka said. "Nothing has been decided either way. I can say that we are listening to the fans and hopefully the fans will be happy with the direction we're going."

It's good to hear that Oka and his team are listening to the fans. After all, the fan community is one of the major reasons why the psychological thriller series exploded in popularity in the first place. While some fans enjoyed seeing an English live-action adaptation of Death Note, many criticized how the plot of the Netflix's adaptation significantly derailed from the original, and many would agree that the Japanese live-action adaptations were superior. Personally, I think the live-action Japanese Death Note films were more satisfying than the anime series, which I think fell off after the death of L. Hopefully, Netflix's Death Note 2 will give fans what they want.

At this point, Netflix hasn't announced any information about Death Note 2. The streamer has been busy developing other live-action anime adaptations such as Cowboy Bebop, One Piece, and Avatar: The Last Airbender.
